Origami comes from the Japanese word ori which means “folding” and kami which means “paper”. Kami was later changed to gami. It is a Japanese traditional art of folding paper to create sculptures of different objects. There are no glues and adhesives involved because pure origami only makes use of folding techniques to create the object.
Any paper can be turned into a small paper sculpture. Origami paper, commonly referred to as kami is available in pre-cut squares that come in different sizes from 2.5 centimeters to 25 centimeters and even more. Typically, one side is colored or have different designs while the other side is white in color. But there are also available papers that have colors on both sides.
There are different types of origami. There are action, modular, wet-folding, Pureland, etc.
Action origami are those that can be moved using clever ways. They include models that can fly. Other creations can be inflated to complete the look, etc. The traditional Japanese flapping bird is the most common.
Modular is the result of putting together a number of similar pieces to create a finished model. Wet-folding, on the other hand, is a technique where models have gentle curves instead of the traditional straight lines and folds. The paper that will be used is wet so that it can be easily manipulated and moulded. When the model dries, it retains its shape.
Pureland is a strict form of paper folding wherein the creator is restricted to perform only fold at a time. Complex folding such as reverse folding is not allowed. John Smith developed the art in the 1970′s. Some like the challenge, which is why pureland has gained a following of its own.
Young and old, anyone can learn how to create works of art using paper. There are so many tutorials available online and even on Youtube. This helps beginners create origami from scratch through the help of self-help videos that we can find online.
Origami is a very relaxing form of creating art. When creating a model, there is no need to rush. You can take your time folding the paper to create wonderful miniature sculptures of animals or other objects such as a rose. This can even be a great thing to give to someone. The time and effort that you have dedicated in creating the art work speaks so much about you. The recipient will be happy to accept something that you have worked hard to create.
